Description

The scene depicts one of the Jewish customs - presentation. Simeon holds Jesus in his arms and calls him the light of the world. He is depicted in the garb of a high priest. Simeon's face is filled with happiness because he has lived to see God's promise fulfilled - he had seen the Messiah before he died. St. Joseph is giving the priest two doves as a sacrifice. Mary is stretching out her hands towards the Child. The prophetess Anna, who also recognized the Messiah in Jesus brought to the temple, is kneeling behind her with folded hands.
