Our Lady of the Rosary with the Baby Jesus and Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena
Description
The painting depicting Our Lady of the Rosary with the Baby Jesus and Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena comes from the turn of the 17th/18th centuries. The painting was created in the workshop of Herman Han. One of the distinguishing elements of the composition is the golden crescent at the feet of the Madonna and the surrounding clouds with winged angel heads. The Madonna is holding a red rosary in her right hand, while the Baby Jesus is holding a white rosary in his left hand and a royal apple in his right. The saints are shown in religious habits. St. Dominic holds a processional cross, and St. Catherine holds a crucifix. They are both touching the rosaries held by the Madonna and Child. In the central part between the saints, the head of a dog is shown holding a torch in its mouth, symbolically representing the Dominican Order as Domini Canes - dogs of the Lord. The painting was originally located in today's side altar of the Blessed Virgin Mary, formerly dedicated to the Rosary Brotherhood. The painting was dismantled after the war and a miraculous icon of Our Lady of Victory was placed on the altar.
