Description
Before 1568, the Montelupich family erected for themselves in the south-west corner of the choir, at the back of the ciborium, under the triumphal crucifix, stone stalls which they used for liturgy. Later, in two phases: between about 1600-1613 and after 1614, they erected a two-storey tomb above them with marble-carved busts of the founders: Sebastian Montelupi and his wife Ursula of Hass (Baz) and Walery Montelupi and his wife Anna of Morecka. In it, Sebastian and Walery Montelupi and their wives are depicted in busts in arcaded niches in a timeless communio, as if they were seated in special lodges during the liturgy. The finial features crest cartouches and allegorical figures: Fortitude, Temperance and Prudence. The lower part of the monument is formed by four-seat stalls, which are also the tombstone's plinth. The tombstone's creator is believed to be an unknown master from the circle of the eminent Italian architect and sculptor, working among others at Wawel Castle, Santi Gucci.
