Description
On the axis of the representation filling the foreground is the figure of the saint, who stands en trois quartes on a rocky light brown platform. He is leaning with his left elbow against a tall, cuboidal sandstone tombstone. His left hand is holding a carving of the head of an ancient goddess (bronze in colour) in his left hand he holds a coal (bronze), and with his right upright hand he points to the sky behind him. He is dressed in dominant coloured robes: the under garment (blue) with a deep neckline revealing the torso, long sleeves, folded over the right knee; the upper drapery (olive, dark green) held up by a ribbon suspended from the left shoulder, spread wide around the right arm and hanging with the end across the panel obscuring the top of the cross carved on it. On the short side of the panel's plinth the painter's signature: Jo: Amb: /Mainardi/f./Roma; green grass and white flowers in front of the tombstone.
