Description
Dominating the composition, the figure of the saint stands, en trois quartes (from left) on the right, on a semi-oval grey platform. In his right hand, he holds a goose feather in front of him; in his left hand, a sheet of paper resting on a lectern supported by books lying on a tall, circular grey-brown plinth. The plinth is decorated with a partially visible bas-relief garland of laurel leaves. The evangelist has turned his youthful face (shown in profile) towards Mary seated on a blue-grey cloud. As Immaculata, she is depicted against a background of a golden sun disc with the sickle of the moon beneath her feet and a circle of twelve stars around her head. She is dressed in a richly draped: white tunic and blue cloak swathed behind her back and a shawl over her dark hair. The saint is wearing distinctive chromatic robes: an underskirt of red (cinnabar), reaching to the ankle of her visible left bare foot, with long sleeves, tied at the waist and with a large round neckline.
