Description

The last sorrow shows the death of St. Joseph. The protector of the Holy Family is revered as the patron saint of a happy death because he had the most beautiful death that a Christian can imagine. Jesus and Mary are watching by the bed with the dying St. Joseph, and the angel unveiled the curtain behind which God the Father, who is waiting for the Carpenter, prepared for him a wreath of glory. In Baroque symbolism, unveiling the curtain meant showing the reality that humans are not able to perceive with their senses. The Holy Spirit is the liaison between heaven and earth. The fresco depicts both the Holy Trinity and the Created Trinity, i.e. the Holy Family.
