The Pensive Christ
Description
One of the most memorable paintings in the northern nave is the picture of Ecce Homo in the central part of the reredos of the altar. The whole surface of the picture, painted on a board, is occupied by the seated Christ crowned with thorns, holding a reed between his bound hands. The poignant impression is intensified by the fact that Christ's head is facing the viewer. The painting was painted at the end of the 17th century, while its iconography resembles late-Gothic representations.
