Saint Joseph rejoices over Christ being adored by shepherds
- Description
- In the fresco, Michael Willmann depicts how the shepherds, awakened by the angel, worship the newborn Child. The shepherds offer the Child what they hold most dear - their prayer. They were the first to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Being extremely joyful about it, one of the shepherds plays a folk instrument, and another carries a basket with gifts. Noteworthy is the symbol of the lamb, displayed by one of the shepherds and beaming with a strange light. In the Scriptures, John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God. According to tradition, the shepherds have the faces of local peasants.
