- Description
- In the foreground, the painter depicts the inert body of Christ, supported on the knees of the seated Mother of God. The Savior's head is tilted back. Mary is holding up one of Christ's hands, turning her face towards Mary Magdalene, who is standing above her. There are also Joseph of Arimathea and Cleophas. On the left, on the ground lie the Instruments of Christ's Passion: the crown of thorns, the nails and the banderole removed from the cross. A rocky cliff, overgrown with deciduous bushes, serves as the background for the scene. In the lower-left corner of the canvas, there is the painter's signature: CLASSENS JNVENIT ET PINXIT 1699.
