Fragment of the reliquary bust of Saint Hedwig of Silesia
Description
Unlike museum collections, the cathedral treasury remains a place that is still actively functioning. The objects stored within it have been continuously used for the liturgical purposes for which they were created for centuries. Many of them can be regularly seen by the faithful during worship services. Some adorn the cathedral presbytery, presented on special occasions, during religious holidays and ceremonies. The collection changes and enriches, also continuously fulfilling its utilitarian role, which in itself is an extraordinary testament to the continuity of its history, albeit disrupted by historical accidents and disasters, yet unceasingly enduring from the Middle Ages to the present day. Historic chalices still find their way into the hands of the priests and canons celebrating Mass, pastoral staffs are carried by bishops, reliquaries are placed in front of the main altar, and antique thuribles spread the scent of incense.
