Scala Salutis – the Intercession of Christ and Mary for sinful humanity before God the Father
Description
Another very valuable representation is the polychrome preserved on the eastern wall of St. Joseph's Chapel. Made around 1425, the Gothic painting depicts Scala Salutis - the Intercession of Christ and Mary for sinful humanity before God the Father. In the centre of the fresco, God the Father seats on a cushion lying on a stone throne surrounded by a cloud. Looking straight ahead, he raises his right hand in a rhetorical gesture, while his left hand resting on his knee holds a globe topped with a cross. On the right, Christ is standing in perizoma, on the left is kneeling Mary. She is extending her hands in a protective gesture towards the kneeling adorers below. This type of representation is extremely rare in Poland. Until the 1980s only three examples were known, two from Kraków and one from Pelplin.
