Description
The saint stands in slight contrapposto (body weight on right leg) facing the viewer. In his right hand he holds a book supported by the back of his hip. His left hand, palm outstretched, is slightly tilted to the side. Between the figure's bare feet can be seen the right profile of a lion's head with closed eyes, drooping lips, large nostrils and an almost smooth mane. The head of the evangelist - a mature man with a moustache and long beard - is framed by shoulder-length curly hair revealing a high, furrowed forehead.

The ankle-length robe with a collar and long sleeves is tied at the waist with a cord. Thrown over his left shoulder is a long cloak wrinkled over his arms and wrapped around his torso so that it forms deep diagonal folds in front.
