- Description
- Relief with a scene of a vision of the Virgin Mary appearing to St Norbert at Premontre to offer him a habit for the Order.
The saint is depicted with another mitzvah during prayer. They kneel dressed in habits, their left side facing the viewer. Between them, angels hold a habit handed over by the Mother of God suspended in the clouds. The monk in front of the altar mensa (left side) has an open book in his hands and does not participate in the vision of the saint, who behind his back spreads his hands in a prayerful gesture, his head surrounded by a radiant halo turning towards Mary.
The upper part of the relief is filled with: swirling clouds; the Virgin Mary and Child, depicted on the left in bust, surrounded by winged angel heads; two child angels hovering at the sides of the habit given to Norbert.
In the foreground, two hats lie on the floor, with an open book and an olive branch between them.
Relief based on Th.Galle's engraving no.15 from the 'Vita S. Norberti' a book annotated and published by Ch. van der Sterre in Antwerp in 1622.
