- The main scene consists of the suffering Mother of God leaning over the body of Christ and St. John the Evangelist holding her hand. In the background, we can see two characters, one of them who stands with his back to us, reaches his hand out to the linen hanging on the cross. The buildings of Jerusalem in the background.
