Description
The painting depicts Mary as an apocalyptic woman - a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head (Rev 12:1). On her knees, she is holding the blessing Child in the convention of Emmanuel, He holding the globe in His hands, thus representing the iconographic type of Salvator Mundi. Both persons are surrounded by a wreath of white and red roses, a Marian attribute. At the bottom of the painting, there is the Coat of Arms of the Lubiąż abbey, the date 1663 and the abbot's initials - AAL. Originally, the painting was intended for the monastery church in Lubiąż and was ordered by abbot Arnold Freiberger in 1663. Even before secularisation, it was placed in the church in Słup. It is presumed that the figure is a portrait of Willmann's wife, Helena Liszkowa.
