Description

The Crucifixion of Christ is an example of a 16th-century painting. The title scene is shown in the middle distance, against the background of a night landscape. Among the mourners, the painting depicts St. John the Evangelist, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of Jesus. Also shown are soldiers playing dice for Jesus' robe. Defects in the paint layer reveal brownish-red painting support, which, according to researchers, indicates the painting's northern Italian origin. This circumstance raises the importance of the work and enriches the collection of modern art in the church.
